How many endoscope types does the clinic use,and how do they differ?
ENT endoscopy is not a single instrument — and each scope does not see the same anatomy in the same way.
At RAJVITHI CLINIC we use both rigid and flexible fiber optic endoscopy to help assess the upper airway. The physician selects the appropriate scope according to the target area, symptoms, and purpose of examination — not a one-scope-fits-all approach.
RIGID
What is a rigid endoscope?
A rigid endoscope has a straight, non-flexible shaft. It is particularly useful for detailed examination of the nasal cavity.
Depending on scope angle and the area being examined, it can provide a clear, detailed view of nasal structures within reach.
Areas or findings that may be evaluated include the nasal cavity, septum, inferior turbinate, mucosa, discharge, polyps or masses, and regions near sinus drainage pathways when visible.
Rigid endoscopy supports detailed direct examination of the nasal cavity. It does not mean every sinus cavity can be seen directly in every case.

FLEXIBLE FIBER OPTIC
What is a flexible fiber optic endoscope?
A flexible fiber optic endoscope has a flexible shaft and can follow anatomy farther toward the posterior nasal cavity and upper airway.
It is useful for examining the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, throat/pharynx, base of tongue where appropriate, larynx, and vocal cords.
When clinically appropriate, it may also allow assessment of structures during breathing, phonation, swallowing, or other functional movements.
In short, the flexible scope helps when examination needs to continue beyond the nasal cavity toward the throat and larynx.

COMPARISON
How do rigid and fiber optic views differ?
These are not simply “better vs worse.” They differ in physical characteristics and in which areas they help the physician evaluate, depending on anatomy, target site, symptoms, and exam purpose.

- Direct view of structures the scope can reach
- Useful for nasal structure and pathology assessment
Flexible Fiber Optic
- Flexible shaft that can follow anatomy
- Can continue from the nose into the upper airway

- Can help assess selected structures during movement
The point is not which scope is better — it is which scope fits the area the physician needs to examine.
PATIENT CHOICE
Do patients need to choose the scope themselves?
No.
The physician decides which endoscope is appropriate after considering symptoms, the suspected location of findings, anatomy, and the purpose of examination.
In some cases one scope is sufficient. In others, a different scope or additional examination approach may be used if more areas need evaluation.
This does not mean every patient needs both scopes.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why matching the scope to the target area matters
“Endoscopy” is not one identical examination every time.
Diagnostic value depends on which structure needs to be seen, how far the exam must extend, and whether detailed nasal anatomy or dynamic upper-airway function needs assessment. Choosing the scope is part of the examination — not something patients must decide alone.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions when patients hear “ENT endoscopy.”
Is rigid always better than fiber optic?
No. They are not ranked as universally better or worse. Each has different properties and reaches different areas. The physician chooses according to the target of examination.
Does nasal endoscopy show every sinus?
Not in every case. Endoscopy helps assess structures within reach, including regions near sinus drainage pathways when visible. It does not mean every sinus cavity is seen directly.
Should I ask for both scopes?
Not necessarily. One scope is often enough. The physician decides based on symptoms, anatomy, and the purpose of assessment.
Does endoscopy alone always give a definitive diagnosis?
