What is a sleep test?
A sleep test records breathing and sleep over one night to see whether airflow falls or stops. It is not a brain scan, and it is not required for every person who snores.
Results are read with symptoms and the airway exam. In Chiang Mai, clinic assessment and home testing for selected patients are available. Test type should follow the clinical picture, not a single package for everyone.
PURPOSE
What is the test for?
It looks for reduced breathing, lower oxygen, or fragmented sleep to support or weigh against a sleep apnea diagnosis.
It does not map every anatomical site. Endoscopy or an ENT exam still helps locate narrowing.
WHO
Who might be offered a test?
Not every snorer needs a test straight away.
It is often considered when sleep apnea is likely — witnessed pauses, marked daytime sleepiness, or medical conditions where sleep may matter.
- A partner notices breathing pauses or gasping
- Daytime sleepiness despite enough time in bed
- Blood pressure or heart disease where sleep data would change care
- Airway procedures are being planned but apnea is still a concern
WHAT IS RECORDED
What is measured?
Typical signals include airflow, breathing effort, oxygen, snoring, and position or movement.
Some people can be tested at home when suitable. Others need a more detailed laboratory study. The choice is clinical.
CHIANG MAI
How is testing arranged in Chiang Mai?
At Rajvithi ENT Clinic an otolaryngologist assesses the airway first. Home sleep testing may be offered when appropriate; details are on the Sleep & Snoring Center page.
Local availability does not mean every snorer should be tested. Indication, limits, and alternatives are explained first.
LIMITS
Limits to understand
A study supports decisions. It does not show every collapse site or guarantee that a procedure will work.
A poor night’s sleep or a shifted sensor can make data incomplete. Results are interpreted with symptoms.
SUMMARY
Summary
A sleep test answers questions about breathing in sleep. It does not replace an ENT airway exam.
Consider testing when sleep apnea is likely. The method follows clinical assessment. Start with an ENT review of the airway if you are unsure.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about sleep tests
Does a sleep test hurt?
It is not a painful procedure. Sensors or a recorder are worn during sleep.
If I only snore, do I need a test?
Not automatically. Associated symptoms and risk guide the recommendation.
Home testing versus a sleep laboratory?
They differ in detail and who they suit. A clinician chooses after assessment.
Does a result tell me the exact treatment?
It informs the plan. Treatment still depends on the narrowing site and severity.
